Oulu is a modern university city and an internationally renowned center of research. In spite of this, the city has managed to preserve its natural charms. Visit the Tietomaa Science Centre to learn about scientific achievements. The Oulu University campus boasts beautiful botanical gardens in a very picturesque area on the shore of Kuivasjärvi lake.
Living in Oulu
As well as unspoiled natural lakes, Oulu also boasts huge expanses of forestland. Outdoor life is very popular here, especially water sports and winter sports. Cruising, beach sports, and night fishing: you’ll find it here. Oulu offers the full Finnish winter experience: skiing, swimming, saunas, snowcapped forests and frozen coasts, ice skating, and reindeer sledding. When it starts to warm up a bit, you can reach for your roller skates or your bike, ride a horse, or go for a run in the park. The Oulu cathedral is an architectonic gem in the heart of the city. The unique Kierikki Stone Age Centre is also not far from the city. If you prefer a day of hustle and bustle to nature, sport, and recreation, head for Helsinki, a very modern city that holds its own against other leading European capitals.
