1Nijmegen in Gelderland province is the oldest city in the Netherlands. Most of the city is situated on the left bank of the Waal. Home to around 180,000 inhabitants (2022), Nijmegen is the ninth most populous city in the country and the biggest in the province.

2Mariken van Nimwegen is the best-known person in Nijmegen’s history. Her statue stands on the Grote Markt, the city’s main square.

3Event-wise, the city is best known for the Nijmegen Four-Day Marches. Many people take part every year. Side events – the Four-Day Festivities – are also hosted at the same time as the Nijmegen Four-Day Marches.

4Culture, archaeology, and art are all found at Het Valkhof museum. The Africa Museum highlights aspects of that continent’s culture in superb exhibitions.

5The nature of Nijmegen is a wonder to behold. Nijmegen rests against a moraine, which was deposited in the last ice age but one. Enjoy nature at the Bastei (museum), Spiegelwaal (beach, swimming, rowing), the city floodplains (water and polder), and the hills of Berg en Dal, which are ideal for hiking, cycling, and mountain biking.
Working in Nijmegen
Nijmegen is part of the Nijmegen city region and is close to the cities of Arnhem and Wijchen. Easily accessible, the city has a number of motorway links to the rest of the Netherlands, including the A15 and the A73. The Waal is crossed by lots of bridges, including the Waal bridge and the Oversteek for cars and the Snelbinder for cyclists and pedestrians. There are four train stations in Nijmegen.
Living in Nijmegen
Nijmegen is a vibrant student city. As well as beautiful old buildings and parks, you will also find trendy shops, events, and eateries. Nijmegen has the highest terrace density in the Netherlands, bringing plenty of options for drinking, dining and partying.
