1Groningen is known as the “the northern metropolis” in the Netherlands, the economic hub of this part of the country. The city is home to 234,977 people (2022).

2The bustling center of Groningen offers lots of nightlife and culture options. This is partly due to its university, attended by around 60,000 students, almost 35,000 of whom live in the city (2018).

3The city’s highest landmark is the Martini Tower on the Grote Markt, the main market square.

4Groningen is just a two-hour drive from Utrecht, two and a half hours from Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport, and three hours from The Hague and Rotterdam.

5The Forum in the heart of Groningen is the destination for everyone who is curious about today’s world and tomorrow’s possibilities. It hosts major exhibitions, the Storyworld museum, a five-screen cinema, the library, Smartlab, cafes and restaurants, and a rooftop terrace providing phenomenal views.
Working in Groningen
Working and living in the north has its advantages. Groningen has cleaner air than any other city in the Netherlands. There is also a supply of affordable homes in and around the city. Traffic is less of a problem than in other parts of the country. Groningen Airport Eelde is a 10-minute drive from the city center, with flights to attractive destinations.
Living in Groningen
Groningen is a city for cyclists. It was the first city in the Netherlands where all lights turn green for cyclists at the same time at intersections. Groningen is known for its stricking architecture, with landmarks that include the Martini Tower and the Groninger Museum. The city is a mecca for nightlife. The night is long, because there are no closing times. Groningen is also home to several breweries, including Baxbier, Martinus, and Hooghoudt. Tours and tastings are available.
